Genealogical Arguments
When one thinks it is sufficient to show that if some genealogical11. on a classic example, see the idea of hermeneutics of suspicion element is at play, then the validity of holding a belief is undermined.
Someone shows that you yourself hold some belief X that is really only held because some factor Y about your life. This factor could be that you are rich or poor, white or black, straight or gay, American or Japanese, etc.
This is not only fallacious, nothing about being poor logically necessitates you be a socialist or capitalist. Slaves and emperors have both been Stoics. It is also a vicious circle because one could and will do the same to you, they will find some factor Z that explains why you hold a belief or set of beliefs.
It is vicious because arguing like this leads to division and hatred, not understanding. Posting about it on social media, writing in magazines, etc., does nothing to reach understanding or influence peoples minds.
