It makes for a good story nowadays to show all the artificial and dark ways that our social order is reproduced, that it cannot do it on its own. The son or the father joining some hard crime to pay for the rest of their family to have a cushy, carefree, middle class life. Or a woman swiping and selling drugs from her hospital job to pay back debt and keep her middle class lifestyle, at least keep the appearance of it. If every social order ebbs and flows, the receding of it is probably marked by an ever increasing inability for the social order to reproduce itself, but instead need to be held up through other means.
