A budding student of psychoanalysis was explaining to me one night at a bar the point of Freud, what is his legacy. For them, Freud's essential idea was to give a mental map of the your mind, not the mind. The mind for Freud, or maybe the psyche or some similar phrase is less ambiguous, may have the same matter and efficient causes and such, maybe some variations in genes and other neurological variations. However, there is no one size fit schema for the psyche. The ego and the id, censorship, they are not going to be found in the same place and same way we might find the prefrontal cortex in the brain. The blueprint is unique for each person.
