Independence is not primary, in any sense of the word. We are not created out of nothing, and never will be, natural or artificial. We cannot, for some reason, confront the other we depend on head on, to integrate them, but we need to at the same time. Independence is born out of a sort of spiritual and psychological cannibalism. We devour the other to make them part of us, but they live on inside in some capacity. To achieve independence, we must overcome the external dependency by bringing it within. We may not even know the other is inside ourselves after we have fused with them, the new chimera we become is who we always have been.
